Organotypic hippocampal slice a model for chronic studies
Organotypic cultures made from slices of explanted tissue represent a complex multicellular in vitro environment with the potential to assess biological functions which mimic the organ function.

Organotypic hippocampal slice cultures contain the lamellar neuronal network of hippocampus that not only display synaptic transmission but also exhibit several forms of short and long-term synaptic plasticity.
They have become an attractive alternative to acute hippocampal slices thanks to:
- an in vitro preserved neuronal network allowing chronic studies
- high content screening model between high throughput approaches and animal models
